Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) has officially broken ground on a new 38,000-square-foot Automotive Technology Training Center at its Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood — a major investment not only in education but in Long Island’s future workforce.
This expansion represents a forward-looking partnership between SCCC and Empire Automotive Group, a Long Island–based company that’s driving innovation in local workforce development. Through a new naming agreement with the Suffolk Community College Foundation, Empire Automotive Group is helping fund the project — a collaboration that underscores how local businesses and educational institutions are joining forces to build a stronger regional economy.
The new center will feature advanced labs, simulation bays, and classrooms equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic tools, hybrid and electric vehicle technology, and industry-grade equipment. Students will gain hands-on experience working directly with vehicles that represent the future of transportation — an essential advantage as the automotive industry continues to shift toward electric mobility.
SCCC President Edward Bonahue noted that the partnership with Empire Automotive Group will “advance and enhance our automotive technology training program,” while Empire’s President and CEO Michael Brown highlighted the shared goal of creating a “highly skilled workforce that will drive Long Island’s automotive industry forward.”
For Long Island, this project goes beyond education — it’s about creating sustainable career pathways that keep young professionals local. With the island’s growing focus on workforce development, especially in high-demand technical fields, this facility will help ensure that students are prepared for careers that support Long Island’s evolving economy.
The expansion also comes at a time when Long Island’s automotive and transportation industries are in transition — embracing cleaner technologies, modern infrastructure, and green energy initiatives. As electric vehicle adoption grows and new dealerships and service centers open across Suffolk and Nassau Counties, the need for trained technicians will only increase.
Located in Brentwood, this facility is also a major win for the local community. The investment will attract students, educators, and industry professionals to the area — sparking activity that benefits nearby businesses, housing demand, and Long Island’s broader development goals.
Over 100 local officials, industry partners, and community members attended the groundbreaking ceremony, signaling widespread support for a project that merges education, innovation, and economic growth.
SCCC will continue its existing automotive training programs at the Ammerman Campus in Selden, ensuring that opportunities for hands-on technical education are available across the county. Both facilities are accredited by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Education Foundation, preparing graduates for jobs in dealerships, franchise operations, and independent service shops.
This isn’t just a milestone for SCCC — it’s a sign that Long Island is investing in the future of its communities, its industries, and its people.
