A taste of Florida’s vibrant taco culture is heading to Huntington Station this winter.
Rocco’s Tacos & Tequila Bar, a Florida-based Mexican restaurant chain, has announced plans to open its first Long Island outpost at Walt Whitman Shops. The 5,500-square-foot eatery is expected to open later this year, bringing with it bold flavors, lively nightlife energy, and a personal homecoming story for its founder.
For founder Rocco Mangel, opening on Long Island isn’t just about expansion — it’s about returning to his roots. Mangel grew up here, attending local schools and watching his father run the beloved Hauppauge restaurant Michael.
“Coming back to where it all began is incredibly special to me,” Mangel said. “Long Island is where I grew up, went to high school, and formed so many of the memories that shaped who I am. Opening a Rocco’s here isn’t just about bringing great tacos and guac to New York — it’s about coming home and sharing the energy and culture with the community that helped raise me.”
Adding to the nostalgia, Racanelli Construction — the same company that built his father’s restaurant — has been tapped to build the new Huntington Station location.
The Walt Whitman Shops location will seat about 200 guests and feature an all-season outdoor patio, perfect for year-round dining. The menu highlights Mexican-inspired favorites, including:
Tableside guacamole made fresh to order
Hand-pressed corn tortillas cooked onsite
Street-style tacos with a variety of fillings
Enchiladas, burritos, bowls, and salads for every appetite
A massive tequila collection — over 200 options — paired with signature margaritas
It’s a concept that has already taken Florida by storm, with thriving restaurants in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Orlando, Tampa, and beyond.
Long Island has no shortage of Mexican restaurants, but Rocco’s reputation for pairing authentic flavors with a lively, high-energy dining experience sets it apart. For shoppers at Walt Whitman or residents nearby, the new restaurant is poised to become both a family dinner spot and a nightlife destination.
And for those who appreciate a little local history, it’s also a full-circle moment — a reminder of how deeply food and family are woven into the Long Island story.
