New Propel NY App Powers $3.26B Long Island Grid Upgrade

New Mobile App Launched for $3.26B Propel NY Transmission Project

NY Transco and NYPA launch app to connect communities to 90-mile electric transmission upgrade, with major Long Island impact

New York Transco (NY Transco) and the New York Power Authority (NYPA) have unveiled a new mobile app designed to keep residents, businesses, and stakeholders informed about the $3.26 billion Propel NY Energy transmission project — a 90-mile underground and submarine line that will modernize and strengthen New York’s electric grid.

With nearly 60 miles of new transmission lines slated for Long Island — including 31 miles in Oyster Bay, 15 miles in North Hempstead, 12 miles in Hempstead, and 1.6 miles in Huntington — the project represents one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the region in decades.

A Digital Tool for Local Communities

The Propel NY Energy app, now available for free on the Apple Store and Google Play, provides real-time project updates, construction schedules, route maps, and fact sheets. Residents will also be able to submit questions and feedback directly through the app.

“As we continue advancing one of New York’s most important energy infrastructure projects, it’s essential that we keep communities informed and connected at every step,” said Shannon Baxevanis, director of Communications & Public Affairs at NY Transco.

This mobile app complements NY Transco and NYPA’s broader community engagement efforts, which have included open houses, webinars, and pop-up information sessions across affected neighborhoods.

How Propel NY Will Boost Long Island’s Economy

While the project’s primary goal is to enhance grid reliability and resiliency, its economic ripple effects on Long Island are expected to be significant:

  • Job Creation: Construction of nearly 60 miles of transmission lines on Long Island will create hundreds of skilled trade and union jobs, supporting local workers in engineering, construction, and utility services.

  • Local Spending: Major infrastructure projects inject dollars into local economies through contracts with Long Island-based suppliers, equipment rentals, hotels, restaurants, and transportation services.

  • Business Growth: A more resilient energy grid will help attract and retain businesses on Long Island that require reliable power, from advanced manufacturing to technology startups.

  • Property Value Stability: Strengthening the electric grid reduces the risk of large-scale outages, which in turn helps maintain neighborhood desirability and long-term property values.

  • Clean Energy Integration: Propel NY will play a role in delivering renewable energy into the grid, supporting New York’s climate goals and positioning Long Island as a hub for offshore wind and other green technologies.

“Propel NY Energy is a critical energy infrastructure project that is using the latest communications tools available to keep all New Yorkers informed,” said Susan Craig, director of Communications and External Affairs for NYPA.
